Naki Nik Naks 0010 – Nova – March 2026
Nova is essentially a workstation that integrates into our style and living environment for working from home. 100 year old plus industrial Singer components supporting a naturally dried macrocarpa slab. The workstation complimented with a living edge wood slab shelf with built in lighting.
The before
Nova started life as a naturally dried slab of Macrocarpa wood. The idea came around from the slab and wanting to use some leftover industrial Singer sewing machine cabinet legs to fashion a desk / workstation.

The process
Relatively simple, but time consuming. The slab had to be cut to size (by hand) and then adys of sanding with an orbital sander, starting with 40 grit and working down to 120. Epoxy needs a rough surface to best adhere to which is a strange concept when trying to get a sleek glass like finish – the epoxy does that for you.
We fashioned a frame from living edge beams to attach the legs, pre-drilled and assembled then stripped to spend a weeks applying coats of epoxy resin to achieve the desired finish. We added in redwood feet to add some contrast.
The shelf was a similar process. We needed to drill 450mm 8mm holes and route out the recess for the lighting components prior to applying the final resin coats and assembling. The lamps are oddities we found online.

The end result
Nova, a living edge desk workstation and shelf incorporating lighting that fits into our style and living space.
